Ask people who have completed do-it-yourself projects and they'll tell you that the projects took at least twice and much time and three times the money they thought they would. The basic reason is that DIYers usually make a lot of mistakes that end up making home improvement projects more expensive and time-consuming.

Here are 10 surefire ways to avoid the top DIY home improvement mistakes in the future and ensure success.

1. Take out the required permits - it's amazing how many DIYers skip this step. Sure, it takes time, and it means you have to deal with the government, but it's actually in your best interest to make sure get the required home improvement permits. The folks in the permitting office will make sure the project is done correctly and that you stay safe in the process. Also, for some projects, you'll need proof that you have a permit or your insurance company won't cover the improvement. You'll probably need a permit for any project larger than wallpapering and painting. If you're unsure, call your local building department and ask.

2. Have all the tools and materials you need available before you start your project - starting a job without the necessary tools and supplies will slow down the job and delay your progress. And make sure you buy quality tools. They're a wise investment.

3. Prepare the job site for material deliveries - when your suppliers deliver materials, you'll want to make sure the job site is ready to accept them. You don't want your materials exposed to the weather while you are working and you want to have a storage area to prevent theft.

4. Don't skimp on materials - for example, don't use 1/4-inch drywall for building walls. Use at at least 5/8-inch; and 3/4-inch works well for a good sound barrier. Use 3/4-inch plywood for sub-floors. It creates a much stronger floor.

5. Prepare the walls for painting - clean the walls, sand them and patch any holes before you paint. Use a coat of primer or stain blocker if you're trying to cover over oil-based paint, stains or peeling paint, or if you're painting a lighter color over a darker color.

6. Use the correct paint - use flat paint ceilings. Interior paints should have at least an eggshell or satin finish so you can scrub it. For outdoor decks, use a linseed-oil-based stain to drive the pigment into the wood and preserve it.

7. Keep safe while working - you don't want to end up in the emergency room. Wear safety goggles when using power tools or working with drywall or wood. Wear a hard hat when you're working under other people on scaffolding, and open some windows when you're painting or staining, or stripping old finishes off of floors or walls. Don't wear loose, hanging clothing, especially when using power tools. Wear gloves when carrying wood, metal and rock, or when hammering, and wear a nail or tool pouch to prevent damage to your floors, feet, and pets.

8. Measure twice and cut once - probably the most important rule of any project. If you're going to make a mistake, make it too long. You can always make something shorter. You can't make it longer.

9. Know the limits of your abilities - you're not going to be good at everything. If you don't have a lot of experience at plumbing or electrical work, for instance, don't attempt those projects.

10. Don't start to learn how to do a project on your own house - If you want to learn how to do a project, offer your assistance to a friend who is an experienced DIYer or a contractor. And if you have any question about what you're doing, make sure you stop and ask.

In fact, the cooler keeps the air circulating in a room, meaning that you feel even cooler due to the slight breeze that the swamp evaporative cooler creates.

So in order for a swamp evaporative cooler to work efficiently, it needs to be used in a hot, dry climate. If your climate is more humid, an evaporative cooler is probably not the best choice for you. But where these coolers do work well, they work very well. They also save users money and energy. If you are trying to maximize the space in your room, consider purchasing a loft bed or bunk bed to elevate your sleeping area. With loft beds, the bed is elevated on a platform with space left underneath for living, working, or playing. Bunk beds work on the same principal, but with another bed underneath the top bunk. Both are popular with children and teens, who often have limited space in their rooms; however, many parents worry about their safety.

Each year, thousands of children are rushed to emergency rooms after falling from the top bunk of their bunk beds or loft beds, while many more receive less serious injuries that are not seen by a medical professional. Typically, the main reason of injury involving bunk beds or lofts beds is horseplay and not from improperly installed beds. Before you purchase bunk beds or loft beds for your child, consider the age of the child and plan to make rules regarding the use of the bed. Although younger children are thought to experience more injuries, the most problems occur with older children who are more apt to disregard rules and exhibit unsafe or risky behavior.

For the most part, bunk beds and loft beds are just as safe as conventional beds. For smaller children, consider designating the lower bunk as their bed instead of allowing them to regularly climb to the top bunk. Also, ensure the bed is properly maintained and meets all current safety regulations and standards. Furthermore, the guard rail needs to extend no less than five inches above mattress so that your child will be unable to roll off the top bunk.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the bunk bed or loft bed your purchase has guard rails on both sides. Even though one side of the bed will be placed next to a wall, a guard rail is essential due to a child potentially falling next to the wall and becoming trapped between the wall and the bed frame. Again, the guard rail should be no greater than three and one-half inches above the bed frame. Also, you should ensure that the mattress purchased to fit the bunk bed or loft bed properly fits the frame. Many parents choose to use a preexisting mattress used on a child-sized bed that is smaller than a traditional twin bed frame. Children can potentially fall between the mattress and the frame in this situation, so you should ensure the mattress is of the proper size.

In addition to ensuring the mattress is of proper size, you should also check that the mattress foundation is properly suspended above the bottom bunk or the space below. If the bed sits on a wooden platform, consider reinforcing the mattress with wooden slats or metal straps. I want to draw attention to your ceiling. Take a look at it. Ceilings are an often neglected area of the room when it comes time to redecorate (or repair). One of the easiest and least time-consuming projects is the installation of a ceiling medallion. Although in the past they were made from plaster, today these decorative ornaments are made of lightweight polyurethane foam. This makes them much easier to handle. Ceiling medallions are used to draw attention to chandeliers and light fixtures, or to enhance crown molding. They can also be combined with a rosette and used to decorate an otherwise plain ceiling. You can use these architectural ornaments as wall decorations. Use several small ones in the hallway. Ceiling medallions are versatile and come in many styles and sizes. They can be painted to match any room. Ceiling medallions are one of the most popular architectural details.

Ceiling domes are similar to ceiling medallions in that they can transform any room into a work of art. However, they are larger and actually recessed into the ceiling, necessitating that they be planned for at the time of construction. Ceiling domes effectively enhance a foyer, dining room, living room, or even the bathroom.

Crown molding, also referred to as crown moulding, or cornice, is probably THE most important architectural element used to define any interior space. Most of today's interior designers agree that every room benefits from the use of crown molding treatment. Crown molding smoothes the transition from wall to ceiling and does much to define the architectural style of a room. The size and style of crown molding used may vary widely, from a simple cove in a farmhouse kitchen to a large built-up cornice in a grand entry.

Great tips when buying a kitchen counter top

There are many types of kitchen countertop materials available on the market today. Some are of the do it yourself variety while others take special skill and tools to have installed. All kitchen countertop material however have one thing in common. None are the perfect product for everyone.

Take the most inexpensive kitchen countertop material, plastic laminate like the Formica (c) brand. This material is strong relatively stain resistant, comes in a wide assortment of colors, textures and designs and is rather easy to install. The negatives however include it can be cut easily when preparing food and it burns. Accidentally place a hot pan on your new plastic laminate kitchen countertop and you end up with a nice round burn mark. This is permanent and cannot be cleaned away. Knife marks or cuts in this material also tend to fill up with dirt and tend to make the countertop look ugly no matter what it's age. This is actually one of my favorite kitchen countertop materials however because it's a great surface to prepare baking goods and food. To get around the problems with this material, I've simply purchased special plastic cutting boards that resist heat, have them cut into the laminate counter where I usually put hot pans and do my cutting. I get all the benefits of laminate kitchen countertops without the usual problems

Next up, is ceramic tile. Nothing can beat ceramic tile for that "Old World" hand crafted look. The tile itself doesn't burn, scorch, or cut with normal wear. There's a wide array of colors, textures and because it's a hand installed product, you can get as fancy or as plain as you prefer. Beautiful stuff Really. There's two big problems with ceramic tile however. First, because it's tile, there's also grout lines. Although the tile doesn't stain, the grout lines do however. This means that white stuff shows if you have darker grout and darker stuff will show if you have lighter or white tile. Grout maintenance, although not difficult still should be a consideration. The other issue is only a problem if you bake. Rolling out dough on a tile surface is difficult because of the grout lines and tile imperfections. A ceramic tile kitchen countertop is not smooth or perfectly flat.

One type of kitchen countertop growing rapidly in popularity is the solid surface and granite type counters. Solid surface materials are man made while the granite is natural. Each however offer a beautiful blend of natural blend of color that can give your kitchen a clean, upscale look. These materials come in a variety of colors with the solid surface being available in solid and multi colors. Granite typically looks like a multi colored aggregate with a deep glowing tone. The two biggest issues with these products however are the same. The first is price. Both solid surface and granite kitchen countertops can be considered some of the high end, most expensive options available. 100-150 dollars per running foot of countertop is typical. This also may or may NOT include any back splash on the counter. The other issue with both the solid surface and granite countertop materials is the rather limited selection. You will need to be very satisfied with your selection as unlike the cheaper plastic laminate kitchen counter, replacing this material is expensive.

Which window frames are the best

Last week, I told you how to measure for your vinyl replacement windows when replacing aluminum windows. Now that you're ready to order your new vinyl replacement windows, we need to talk about the different frame style options available. In most of the country your choices are limited to either new construction or replacement frames. New construction frames come with a nailing fin to attach the frame to the studs during the construction of the new home. The replacement frame is basically the new construction frame minus the nailing fin.

But in the west, where stucco homes are common, manufacturers came up with a third type of frame called a retrofit frame. The retrofit frame has a fin about 2 inches wide, located flush with the outside face of the window. This is the best choice when replacing old windows, but not all jobs will accomodate a retrofit frame application. So let's discuss how to determine which frame is going to work for you.

If you have a stucco exterior, retrofit is the way to go. You install the new window from the outside, and the flush fin covers the old aluminum frame that you are going to leave in place. Then you screw the new window in using deck screws through the side channels as well as the top header. We will get into more detail on the actual installation in a future article. If you have a stucco exterior, but there is a wood trim around the opening of the window where the flush fin would normally go, you can still use the retrofit style frame. You would need to remove the wood surrounding the opening, install the retrofit window, then purchase and install new wood trim. The old trim will no longer fit since the retrofit window frame dimensions will be larger in width and height than the old window frame. Another option is to install the retrofit fin on top of the wood trim. You can do this as long as the depth from the face of the wood trim to the point in the house of the innermost portion of the old aluminum frame is less than 3 inches deep. The reason is because a good quality retrofit window will have a 3 inch frame depth from the back of the flush fin to the innermost part of the frame. That innermost part needs to be further into the house than the innermost part of the aluminum frame so that the aluminum frame will be hidden after we apply the inside trim. What if you have brick around the window openings? Or siding? Then what? Well, if you can install the window against the face of the brick or siding and still have the innermost part of the vinyl frame be further into the home than the old frame, then you can use the retrofit style frame. If not, then you have to use the replacement style frame,then use trim to finish the outside. If you are able to get a retrofit frame with a relatively thin fin, you can also trim down the fins so the window fits between the brick or wood. That would eliminate the need to trim out the outside. Some manufacturers of retrofit frames will have grooves in the back of the retrofit fins. You simply run a utility knife in the groove until you are able to break off that piece of the fin.

The main point to remember when determining whether or not to use a retrofit frame or a standard replacement frame is that in order to use the retrofit frame there needs to be less than 3 inches from the outside point where the flush fin will rest to the inside point in the room where the old frame ends. If it's less than 3 inches, go with the retro, more than 3 inches, use the replacement frame and add trim to the outside in lieu of the flush fin.

After reading all the other reviews I actually took a moment to look at my chain saw to make certain I have the same Poulan Wild Thing. So after confirming I do own the same one, I am pleased to be able to offer a very positive opinion of this tool.

I have cut down two large trees, Height is really not as relavent as is the diameter of these trees. The first was approximately 40" round, and the second about 37". Both trees fell with ease, and were cut up into sections to be split for fire wood also with much ease. In fact I got just under 2 cords of wood from these 2 trees alone. Both of the trees were Red Oak. HARDWOOD!!

In addition I had a truck load of assorted logs delivered to me. Ranging in diameter from 14" to 30" and 10 feet to 15 feet long, laid on their sides, piled 7 feet high yeilding another 6 cords of wood. Other than going through chains (5 of them mainly because for $18 to replace, I did not want to take the time to sharpen them) I did not have any problem with the chain saw at all.

Yes, it uses lubricating oil, yes it burns fuel. If you use the proper mix of 2 cycle oil the engine runs excellent.

I went through 3 quarts of chain oil, and about 3 gallons of fuel/oil mix.

As the chain breaks in it will loosen up. Adjust is snug and don't try to overtighten it and you will not have any problem. Routine cleaning of the sprockets will allow the saw to continue to run again without issue.

There is vibration, but not too much where I was fatigued. The saw has enough power to cut in upward, and downward direction. It will cut equally fast in either direction.

Cold starts are easy enough after about 2-3 pulls, hot starts are easier generally with 1 pull.

The Gas & Oil Cap do tend to tighten up and need a little help to open after the saw has been running for a while. Better tighter than possibly opening while operating if you ask me.

The saw does NOT kick back very often when used properly. Any chain saw will kick and buck if you are cutting wood in the top front of the chain saw blade and arm.

I am pleased with this purchase, and it has more than earned its place in my shed next to the log splitter.

Listen, I get that fear is a biggie. It's easy to get sucked in. I know a few people right now who are gripped with fear. They're holding on so tight to their mo-ney, that they're "white-knuckling" it through life. They are absolutely miserable. And you know what? They actually have plenty of mo-ney in the bank! But because they have fear, it doesn't matter. Because prosperity is a state of mind.

The key to attracting prosperity is to refuse to focus on things that cause you fear, and to eliminate fear from your life. Now, some clients say to me, "Fabienne, how can I *not* focus on fear. There is evidence all around me that things aren't going well?" My answer to them is that you can CHOOSE not to struggle.

Look all around you. Nature doesn't struggle. A blade of grass doesn't struggle to grow. It just does. Instead of focusing on all the things that appear to be "going downhill", shift your focus. Look at everything around you that IS going well. There's a way that we, as humans, tend to focus on the 2% that's NOT going well, as opposed to the 98% that IS going well in our lives. What are YOU focusing on?

The best way that I've found to get out of fear these days is to focus on the present moment. If I'm in a bad mood or noticing that the collective fear is leaking into my world, I stop everything and I tap into the present moment. However simple this may seem to you, it's actually miraculous. I throw on a scarf, go down to the beach and take a walk along the water. I put my attention on the subtle scent of the sea air, I listen to the seagulls, I watch my footsteps in the sand. I stay totally present. Why?

Because you CANNOT be in fear AND in the present moment at the same time. It's impossible. When you are in the present moment, you are in direct connection to Spirit or God or the Universe, whatever you choose to call it. And that is your direct pipeline to love. And love and fear cannot coexist. It's a universal law.

What does this have to do with Client Attraction? EVERYTHING. Here's why: If you're gripped with fear, sitting at your desk, wondering where the clients are or why people are leaving, you are feeding yourself with this collective fear. That stops you from marketing and the energy that you DO put into your marketing when you actually do it is a negative energy. Which brings more of the lack into your life, which then repels prosperity.

Instead, focus on what's going well. Be in gratitude for what you DO have. Take a break from work, walk away from your desk, tickle your kids, go walk the dog, focus on the air outside, whatever it takes to just take your focus OFF of the fear. When you do that, you will watch the fear literally disintegrate right in front of your eyes. Then, when you go back to work on your marketing, you'll find yourself coming from a totally different perspective. Instead of coming from "lack", you'll be coming from "attraction". And that's when the clients come in. That's when the mo-ney pours in.

Well, in a way, that's true for me. If I don't know about it, then it can't affect me. And so, while the rest of the world seems to be spiraling in a big mess of fear, worry and doubt, I'm oblivious to it, in a good way. Because my mind isn't tainted with this "stuff", I'm continuing to prosper, we continue to grow, and more abundance is flowing into my life in every area. And I wish more people would do what I do. Here's why.

You have to understand that the news media is only interested in one thing, and one thing only: Advertising do11ars (I know, I used to work in advertising.) The more people are tuned in to their show or read their publication, the higher they can charge their advertisers. And to artificially grow the numbers, the media has to do ANYTHING it can to get your attention. And FEAR is the best way to get someone's attention, and to get them to keep coming back for more, for "fear" of missing something important.

CDNOW realised websites that had a bias towards music could list albums on their pages that their visitors would be able to purchase. Such websites could also offer the visitor a portal that would direct them to CDNOW in order to make their purchases.

This idea of remote purchasing was first muted by music label Geffen Records in 1994 who wanted to sell its artists' CDs directly from its website, but did not want to get directly involved itself. They asked CDNOW to implement a system in which CDNOW would handle the order processing. In this way, CDNOW could connect directly the artist on its website to Geffen's website. Such a system would avoid the CDNOW home page and go directly to the artist's music page.

Amazon launched its own system in 1996. This enabled an individual who subscribed to the programme to either place a banner or text link on their website, or link directly to the Amazon home page. With this system, whenever a visitor clicked on the associate's website, they were redirected through to Amazon. Should they make a purchase, the associate would receive payment in the form of a commission.

The first merchant to make an affiliate program available to those who signed-up was, in fact, not Amazon. However, their programme was the first to become widely accepted. Furthermore, it went on to act as a yardstick for other programmes.

Its pre-eminence was further established in February 2000 when Amazon announced that it had been granted a patent relating to all the essential components of an affiliate programme. The patent application
